Amidst Ruins: The Struggle for Recovery in Gaza
Haneen al-Mabhouh's life in central Gaza stands still following the loss of her leg and family in a 2024 Israeli airstrike. Thousands like her face delays in medical care due to a scarcity of prosthetic limbs. Amid ceasefire, evacuations and aid are slow, prolonging hope for recoveries.
In the war-torn streets of Gaza, Haneen al-Mabhouh sits in her wheelchair, clinging to dreams of rebuilding her shattered life. The Israeli airstrike in July 2024 robbed her of her children and her ability to walk, leaving her and thousands like her trapped in a limbo of uncertainty and grief.
The ceasefire has been sluggish to offer the necessary aid and medical evacuations desperately needed for recovery. According to the World Health Organisation, 5,000 to 6,000 Palestinians suffer from amputations, with a significant number being children. The shortage of prosthetic limbs further hampers their return to normalcy.
Despite recent efforts to supply essential prosthetic materials, the delays and bureaucratic hurdles continue to frustrate efforts for medical care. As families wait indefinitely for medical evacuations, hopes of return to a semblance of normalcy remain elusive, underscoring the fragile state of recovery in the region.
