President Donald Trump announced a significant development Thursday involving reciprocal tariffs, a cornerstone of his campaign promises. In a Truth Social post, Trump emphasized the importance of this move, stating it represents a critical step toward his goal of 'Making America Great Again.'
In anticipation of a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived in Washington for an official visit, Trump disclosed that the news conference on the topic would be held at the Oval Office later in the day. This move is seen as a strategy to address perceived unfair trade practices, as each tariff they impose on us will be matched in return.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reiterated the administration's stance, affirming that reciprocal tariffs will benefit American workers while strengthening national security. Trump had earlier stated that tariffs, including a 25% charge on steel and aluminum imports, would come into effect on Monday. During his campaign, Trump promised to enact the Reciprocal Trade Act to level the playing field, demanding that countries either reduce their tariffs or pay the U.S. significantly.
