Pakistan's internal security took a severe hit on Sunday as the government intensified its crackdown on the far-right Islamist group Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP). Dawn reported that at least 170 individuals were detained across Punjab and entry routes were sealed to thwart the group's journey to Islamabad.
Law enforcement agencies, including large contingents of police and Pakistan Rangers, were on high alert in Muridke. Early Sunday, officers began encircling the TLP's protest site, laying trenches and roadblocks in anticipation of a forceful dispersal operation.
The recent unrest comes as TLP followers, camped near Lahore, endeavor to stage an anti-Israel protest in Islamabad in solidarity with the Palestinians. Clashes intensified as TLP attempted to break police lines, leading to violence in Lahore where authorities reported stolen police vehicles and missing officers amid fears of abductions.
TLP's leader, Saad Rizvi, condemned the police's actions, accusing them of using excessive force against his followers and denying allegations of sanctioning a march to Islamabad. Rizvi emphasized the protest aimed to express solidarity with Palestinians and dissuade Pakistan from recognizing Israel.
In response, police held 170 detainees under the Maintenance of Public Order law, spread across various districts. This escalated tensions prompted Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to consult with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on strategies to stabilize the volatile situation.
The TLP's history of violent outbreaks contributes to rising security challenges since its brief ban in 2021 was lifted. As Israel and Hamas announce plans to release hostages, Pakistan's internal security chaos underscores regional complexities.
