West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has voiced strong opposition to any agreement between India and Bangladesh regarding the sharing of Teesta River water. She firmly stated that such an agreement would deprive the northern regions of West Bengal of essential drinking water and irrigation provisions.
Addressing the assembly on a resolution concerning erosion control and flood mitigation, Banerjee highlighted that the Teesta River has minimal water flow during winter and summer months. She also criticized the central government for excluding the West Bengal government from discussions with Bangladesh, noting that her state is a key stakeholder in the matter as the Ganga River flows into Bangladesh from West Bengal.
Banerjee further accused the BJP-led central government of attempting to negotiate water distribution terms without considering West Bengal's interests. She reiterated her government's commitment to maintaining good relations with Bangladesh but emphasized that it should not come at the cost of West Bengal's people.
