Maritime Tensions: Oil Tanker Struck, No Casualties Reported
Two ships, including a Panama-flagged oil tanker, were attacked off Yemen, with no casualties reported. The tanker was hit by missiles, reportedly due to its company’s affiliation with vessels calling Israeli ports. A second incident involved a drone hitting a merchant vessel.
Two ships, including a Panama-flagged oil tanker and a merchant vessel, came under attack in the Red Sea off Yemen on Monday, according to British maritime agencies. The tanker was hit by two projectiles, yet fortunately, no casualties were reported in either incident.
Military authorities confirmed the tanker was attacked by missiles, said security firm Ambrey. The attack occurred approximately 70 nautical miles northwest of Yemen's port of Saleef. Ambrey noted that the ship appeared to be targeted due to its company's affiliation with vessels that call on Israeli ports.
In a related incident, a drone struck a merchant vessel about 50 nautical miles off Yemen's Hodeidah, a Red Sea port near Saleef. The vessel continued to its next port of call unimpeded. These incidents highlight ongoing maritime tensions, particularly with Iran-aligned Houthi militants launching attacks since last November to show solidarity with Palestinians in the Israel-Hamas conflict.
