A North Carolina man, Alexander Justin White, has pleaded guilty in federal court after attempting to board a flight aimed at joining the Islamic State Group.
White, a US citizen, was arrested at Raleigh-Durham International Airport on December 4 after a months-long investigation confirmed his plans to travel to Morocco to align with IS. The US Department of Justice has charged him with efforts to support a foreign terrorist organization.
The investigation gathered evidence from White's social media activities which displayed support for IS. He communicated plans to join the group with undercover FBI agents, even purchasing a round-trip flight to Morocco to dodge suspicion. A potential prison sentence of up to 20 years looms as the legal process unfolds.
