Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, and President of France, H.E. Mr. Emmanuel Macron, made a landmark joint visit to the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) facility in Cadarache, France, earlier today. This marked the first time any Head of State or Head of Government has visited ITER, underscoring the global importance of this pioneering fusion energy project.

Upon arrival, the leaders were welcomed by the Director General of ITER, who briefed them on the project's advancements and future milestones. Both leaders expressed their admiration for the progress achieved in the assembly of the world’s largest Tokamak—a magnetic confinement device designed to harness fusion power. Once operational, the Tokamak aims to generate 500 MW of fusion power by creating, containing, and controlling burning plasma, a feat that represents a major stride toward sustainable and clean energy.

Prime Minister Modi and President Macron also commended the dedication and expertise of the international team of engineers and scientists driving the project forward. They highlighted the significance of international collaboration in advancing scientific research and addressing global energy challenges.

India’s role in ITER has been pivotal, as one of the seven founding members contributing to the project over the past two decades. Approximately 200 Indian scientists, engineers, and associates are actively involved in various aspects of ITER’s development. Additionally, major Indian industry leaders, including Larsen & Toubro (L&T), Inox India, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE), and HCL Technologies, have played critical roles in supplying components and technological expertise.

The visit emphasized the commitment of both India and France to fostering innovation in renewable energy and showcased the potential of fusion energy as a cornerstone of future global energy strategies. The leaders reaffirmed their nations' dedication to collaborative scientific endeavors and the pursuit of sustainable solutions to meet the world's growing energy needs.

This historic visit not only highlights the significance of ITER in the global quest for clean energy but also strengthens the strategic partnership between India and France in the realms of science, technology, and sustainable development.
