Heightened security measures are now in effect across Manipur as the region grapples with the imposition of President's rule, which came into force on Thursday following Chief Minister N Biren Singh's resignation. The decision marks a significant step by the central government to stabilize the troubled state.
A robust security presence has been established within the Imphal valley, an area recently beset by attacks from the banned Arambai Tenggol extremist group, officials reported. To ensure the peace is maintained, Assam Rifles and other paramilitary forces are conducting regular flag marches throughout Imphal city.
The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification confirming the suspension of the Manipur assembly, set to last until 2027, as per article 356 of the Constitution. President Droupadi Murmu received a report prompting this decision, recognizing the state's governance was untenable under the current conditions.
