Legal Turmoil: Impeached President Yoon Faces Criminal Investigation
South Korean police are building a case against impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, accusing him of obstructing the execution of an arrest warrant amid allegations of insurrection. While Yoon defends his actions, his legal team's claim of political motivation has yet to be addressed in the ongoing legal proceedings.
In South Korea, President Yoon Suk Yeol, currently impeached, is facing formal charges for allegedly obstructing the execution of an arrest warrant linked to accusations of insurrection. A police spokesperson confirmed the development to the press on Friday.
The arrest warrant, originally issued on December 31, was delayed due to Yoon's non-compliance and interference from the Presidential Security Service. Investigators were unable to execute the warrant until January 15. Under South Korean law, the obstruction could lead to five years in prison.
Yoon maintains that his previous martial law declaration was not insurrection, a charge from which sitting presidents have some immunity. His defense team argues political bias and procedural errors marred the warrant process. As Yoon's impeachment awaits a decision from the Constitutional Court, key hearings are set to finalize next month.
