An employee of a Mumbai supermarket, D-Mart, faced an alleged assault from Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers on Tuesday for refusing to communicate in Marathi, according to police reports.
The incident took place at the store in Versova, Andheri (West), after a video of the employee expressing his language preference went viral on social media. The clip displayed him telling a customer, 'I will not speak in Marathi, I will speak only in Hindi. Do what you want to do.'
Upon learning of this, MNS's Versova unit president, Sandesh Desai, led a group of workers to the store where they allegedly confronted and slapped the employee. The altercation, also captured on social media, led to the staffer's apology later on.
