The Enforcement Directorate (ED) confirmed on Wednesday that the Rs 52 crore in cash and gold seized from an abandoned SUV in Madhya Pradesh belonged to Saurabh Sharma, a former constable in the state transport department, who is currently under investigation for corruption charges.
This announcement concludes months of speculation regarding the ownership of the substantial stash, which has become a focal point of political contention between the state's ruling BJP and the opposition Congress, both alleging widespread corruption in the transport department during their tenures.
In a probe that also involves the Income Tax Department and the Madhya Pradesh Lokayukta Police, it was found that Sharma, arrested alongside associate Chetan Singh Gaur, used ill-gotten money to acquire assets in the names of relatives and friends. The ED has since attached assets worth Rs 92.07 crore and continues its investigation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
