The budget session of the Puducherry territorial Assembly concluded on Thursday, after 13 days of deliberations. A significant highlight of the session was the unanimous adoption of a resolution appealing to the Centre to award full statehood to Puducherry, which remains a Union Territory.
The resolution, initially brought forward by opposition DMK and Congress members, outlined the challenges Puducherry faces due to its current status. The elected government in Puducherry has 'limited powers', necessitating central approval for its various plans. Advocates stressed that statehood would enhance administrative freedom and accelerate decision-making.
Chief Minister N Rangasamy expressed optimism about achieving statehood, citing a 'conducive environment' for progress. The budget session had commenced on March 10, highlighted by a gubernatorial address, followed by CM Rangasamy's presentation of the 2025-2026 budget.
