An Azeri man was apprehended by Greek police on the island of Crete under allegations of espionage, according to the country's intelligence service. The arrest raised suspicions about his activities around the strategic NATO military base in Souda, an essential site for Greece, the U.S., and NATO in the region.
The 26-year-old suspect had been residing near the naval and air force base since mid-June, and authorities discovered over 5,000 photographs along with encryption software on his seized laptop. His hotel room also contained various digital equipment, heightening suspicions of espionage activities.
Investigations are ongoing to determine if there is a link between this arrest and the recent detention of a British national in Cyprus on terror-related charges. Furthermore, the suspect is expected to face a prosecutor within the week.
