In a startling revelation, the national capital has registered 2,450 murder cases over a span of five years, raising significant concerns about the law and order situation in Delhi. The figures were presented in the Rajya Sabha by Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai, underlining an unsettling trend.
The annual breakdown from the report indicates minor oscillations, with 504 murder cases documented in 2024, 506 in 2023, and a further 509 in 2022. Meanwhile, the COVID-19 pandemic years recorded relatively lower figures with 472 and 459 cases in 2020 and 2021, respectively, reflecting the complexity of factors influencing crime rates.
The statistics were shared in response to parliamentary inquiries about the city's escalating murder rates, posed by House member Ramji Lal Suman. As policy makers grapple with these figures, questions regarding public safety and crime prevention remain at the forefront of governmental discussions.
