The Trump administration has escalated its battle over passport rights for transgender and nonbinary individuals. The administration filed an emergency plea to the U.S. Supreme Court on Friday.
This plea seeks to overturn a federal judge's injunction that stops the State Department from implementing a policy denying gender identity recognition on passports. The policy, initiated at President Donald Trump's directive, restricts passports to reflect only male or female sexes.
This dispute is among several stemming from an executive order, signed by Trump on January 20, mandating the federal government to adhere to binary gender recognition.
