NAPA Raises Alarm: Migrant Crime Surge in Punjab

The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) has raised concerns over rising criminal activities involving migrants in Punjab, urging the state government to implement stricter verification and legal measures. NAPA emphasizes the necessity for immediate action to ensure resident safety and maintain social harmony.

The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) recently voiced its concerns to the Punjab government regarding an apparent uptick in criminal activities linked to the migrant population within the state.

In a letter penned by Executive Director Satnam Singh Chahal, NAPA highlighted the growing fear among local residents due to reported increases in violent crimes, drug offenses, thefts, and assaults. Chahal noted the state's historical openness but stressed that the lack of stringent verification and legal safeguards has led to criminal infiltration in communities. He urged the implementation of mandatory registration, background checks, continuous monitoring of migrant settlements, expedited prosecution of offenders, and comprehensive public awareness efforts.

The association also recommended enacting legislation akin to laws in Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan to effectively manage migrant influx. NAPA warned that failure to act could provoke social unrest, amplify resident fears, and disrupt economic activities.
