Two individuals suffered gunshot wounds in Brussels following a clash between rival groups, according to the Brussels prosecutor's department. The early Thursday incident underscores the persistent issue of violent crime in the Belgian capital.
Police attended Place de Bethleem in Saint Gilles close to the Gare du Midi Eurostar station at around 0230 GMT on October 30. The scene revealed the two injured victims and gun cartridges scattered nearby, while two suspects were detained. Fortunately, the victims' injuries are not life-threatening.
A full-depth inquiry will examine the incident's specific circumstances, amid speculation of its connection to rival drug gangs. Brussels has faced escalating violence tied to these networks, with over 100 of Europe's most dangerous gangs reportedly active in Belgium. Earlier this year, the investigation into a drug-related shooting necessitated the temporary closure of several metro stations in Brussels.
