Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant voiced strong opposition to the Centre's newly implemented labour codes, stating that they threaten workers' rights and foster uncertainty. Speaking on behalf of the Sena (UBT) workers' wing, Sawant criticized the government for allegedly aligning with capitalist interests.
According to Sawant, the new laws move from offering certainty to creating uncertainty for laborers. He confirmed plans to challenge the codes legally. The government has ushered in reforms by implementing the Industrial Relations Code-2020, the Occupational Safety, Health Code-2020, the Social Security Code-2020, and the Code on Wages, 2019, that had been pending.
Sawant warned that these codes could devastate workers' lives by stripping away established rights. Previously, factory owners needed state approval to shut units with over 100 workers; now, this cap has increased to 300. Despite the introduction of some worker-friendly provisions, the codes have unified 29 fragmented laws into a modern regulatory framework.
