President of India Smt Droupadi Murmu conferred the National Handicrafts Awards for 2023 and 2024 at a ceremonial event held in New Delhi on December 9, 2025, celebrating India’s master artisans whose skills preserve centuries-old traditions while shaping the future of the handicrafts sector.
Art as a Bridge Between Past and Future
In her address, President Murmu emphasized that art is a timeless expression of human experience—carrying memories of the past, reflecting present realities, and inspiring future aspirations. Since ancient times, she noted, humans have used painting, sculpture and other creative expressions to communicate emotions and build cultural identity. She highlighted that art not only connects individuals to their heritage but also binds communities together.
Artisans as Custodians of India’s Cultural Heritage
The President praised India’s master craftsmen for keeping traditional art forms alive through generations. Despite rapid modernization, artisans have successfully adapted techniques and styles to contemporary needs while retaining authenticity. Their creations, she said, carry “the fragrance of India’s soil,” representing regional diversity and cultural depth.
Handicrafts: A Pillar of Rural Livelihood and Inclusive Growth
Calling handicrafts a vital socio-economic asset, President Murmu pointed out that the sector employs over 3.2 million people, most of whom live in rural and remote regions. This wide geographic spread, she said, makes handicrafts a strong driver of inclusive development, decentralizing employment and sustaining traditional skills.
She stressed that the sector has historically uplifted weaker sections of society, providing both economic support and social dignity. Women, who make up 68% of the workforce, are central to this industry’s growth—making handicrafts a significant avenue for women’s empowerment.
Sustainability at the Heart of Indian Craftsmanship
President Murmu noted that the handicraft industry is inherently eco-friendly, relying largely on natural, renewable and locally sourced materials. With global attention shifting toward sustainable lifestyles, India’s handicraft sector—known for its low-carbon footprint—has immense potential to contribute to global sustainability goals.
Expanding Global Recognition Through GI Tags and ODOP
The President expressed satisfaction that the Geographical Indications (GI) framework is helping Indian handicrafts gain distinct global identity and protection. She encouraged artisans and state bodies to obtain GI tags for unique regional products to enhance credibility in domestic and international markets.
She also highlighted the role of the One District One Product (ODOP) initiative in promoting regional crafts on global platforms, strengthening brand recognition and market linkages.
Future Growth and Entrepreneurial Opportunities
President Murmu stated that Indian handicrafts, built on generations of expertise and craftsmanship, enjoy growing demand worldwide. This presents promising opportunities for young entrepreneurs, designers and craft-based startups to innovate, collaborate and expand into global value chains.
By celebrating the awardees, she reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to preserving traditional knowledge systems while opening new pathways for sustainable economic development.
