The United Nations has announced a USD 35 million grant for Sri Lanka over the next four years to assist the cyclone-battered island. Saddled with debt from an ongoing economic crisis, Sri Lanka urgently needs this financial support, according to UN Resident Coordinator Marc-Andre Franche.

The United Nations and humanitarian partners unveiled the post Ditwah Humanitarian Priorities Plan (HPP) aimed at providing immediate life-saving relief. As floods and landslides since November 16 have claimed 638 lives, the plan covers crucial areas like education, health, and food security.

Noting that 25% of Sri Lanka's population is living in poverty, the UN appealed to the international community for contributions towards the HPP. Early funds of USD 9.5 million have been secured, but significant financial gaps remain as the UN seeks an additional USD 26 million.
