Tensions Rise as Russian Archaeologist Detained in Poland
Poland has detained Russian archaeologist Alexander Butyagin following Ukraine's accusations of unauthorized excavations and artifact plundering. The arrest has sparked controversy, with Moscow demanding his release and alleging the charges are politically motivated. Poland awaits Ukraine's extradition request as diplomatic tensions escalate.
Poland has taken Russian archaeologist Alexander Butyagin into custody, following accusations from Ukraine of illegal excavations and theft of cultural artifacts in Crimea. This arrest has ignited a diplomatic dispute, with Russian officials demanding his immediate release, calling the accusations politically charged.
The Polish court has allowed Butyagin to be detained for 40 days, pending an extradition request from Ukraine. Ukraine has accused Butyagin's team of carrying out unlawful excavations and appropriating valuable artifacts, including gold coins from the era of Alexander the Great, in the ancient city of Myrmekion.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has condemned Poland's actions as 'legal tyranny' and cautioned Russian citizens against traveling to Poland amid these tensions. As diplomatic efforts continue, Russia's Foreign Ministry insists on Butyagin's innocence, expressing hope for a resolution.
