The assassination of senior Hamas commander Raed Saed by Israeli forces has threatened the viability of the Gaza ceasefire. Khalil al-Hayya urges U.S. President Trump to ensure Israel respects the truce. Hamas vows to continue its path despite Saed's death as both sides control respective territories in Gaza.
The assassination of senior Hamas commander Raed Saed by Israeli forces is straining the Gaza ceasefire, highlighted by Hamas chief negotiator Khalil al-Hayya's call for U.S. President Donald Trump to compel Israel to adhere to the truce.
Thousands of Hamas supporters gathered in central Gaza City to mourn Saed and his associates, carrying their bodies in coffins draped with green Hamas flags, in a significant display since the U.S.-backed ceasefire began in October. Al-Hayya confirmed Saed's death and labeled it the most significant assassination since the ceasefire.
As tensions escalate, Israeli forces maintain control over Gaza's eastern half while Hamas controls the western area. A U.N.-authorized International Stabilization Force is planned to help maintain peace, with the U.S. Central Command organizing a conference to strategize its deployment.
