The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has informed the Supreme Court about the establishment of a high-level committee addressing digital arrest scam cases. These scams represent a rising cybercrime issue where perpetrators impersonate law enforcement or government personnel, coercing victims into paying money.
In response to the Supreme Court's directives from last December, the committee has been tasked with examining current enforcement challenges, analyzing relevant legislation, and recommending corrective actions. The inter-departmental body includes representatives from various ministries and specialists in law and technology.
During the committee's inaugural meeting, discussions highlighted enhancing the adjudication mechanism under the Information Technology Act and introducing standard procedures for handling financial recoveries in fraud cases. MHA pledges continuous improvements addressing cybercrime, emphasizing victim compensation, and regulatory compliance.
