Oath Controversy: Kerala High Court Seeks Explanation for BJP Councillors' Pledges
The Kerala High Court is questioning the validity of the oaths taken by 20 BJP councillors in Thiruvananthapuram. Allegedly, their pledges did not conform to the Kerala Municipality Act, 1994. The court is investigating whether diverse interpretations of 'God' could influence the oath-taking process.

The Kerala High Court has requested answers from the State Election Commission and the Kerala government regarding claims that 20 BJP councillors took invalid oaths after winning the Thiruvananthapuram corporation poll.
Justice P V Kunhikrishnan has also issued notices to the councillors, following allegations that they swore their oaths in the names of various deities and figures, diverging from the mandated format according to the Kerala Municipality Act, 1994.
The court acknowledged that while interpretations of 'God' can vary, there remains a question of legality when pledges are made in the name of living persons or non-standard figures. The court's decision will determine the status of these oaths.
