Bolsonaro's Prison Upgrade: From Small Cell to Papuda Penitentiary
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been moved to the Papuda Penitentiary Complex in Brasilia, following an order by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. His transfer comes amid complaints about his previous conditions, and he will now serve his sentence in better accommodations.
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was relocated to the Papuda Penitentiary Complex in Brasilia on Thursday. The decision came from Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who responded to complaints regarding Bolsonaro's previous prison conditions.
Bolsonaro, serving a 27-year sentence for coup plotting, had been housed in a significantly smaller cell within the Federal Police Superintendency. Concerns from his family and legal team about his well-being prompted the court's action. His new accommodation provides improved living conditions, including medical access and space.
The former leader's cell now measures 65 square meters and features a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living room, and outdoor area. Despite his family's suggestions for house arrest, the court cited flight risk concerns, particularly given Bolsonaro's history, including previous surgical interventions.
