The Iranian Students News Agency reported Tuesday that the national security parliamentary commission of Iran has issued a stern warning. According to the commission, any attack on the Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, would precipitate a declaration of jihad, or holy war.
This development escalates the already strained relations between Tehran and Washington. The tension between the two countries has intensified in the wake of a severe governmental crackdown on protests across Iran. U.S. President Donald Trump has cautioned that these actions could provoke a response from the United States.
The commission stressed that an assault on Khamenei would be perceived as an act of aggression against the entire Islamic world. It called for a jihad decree by Islamic scholars and warned of a possible mobilization of Islam's soldiers globally.
