The Vice President of World Bank Africa, Hafez Ghanem has expressed desire to augment support from the international finance institution-funded projects in Ghana in an aim to reduce poverty.
The World Bank, on the other hand, is also agreed to pump out more funds for agricultural initiatives in Ghana to enhance productivity and offer sustainable livelihoods to vulnerable groups, mainly women.
According to Hafez Ghanem, who has assured of more funds from the World Bank, investments in technology-driven agriculture is certainly paving the road to promote inclusion in the agricultural sector, reduce poverty and also fight hunger in line with the Sustainable Development Goals. He also said that while the global financial group is set to provide more funds to promote agriculture (especially for women groups), it is equally vital for everyone involved in implementing the programmes to be diligent to ensure that the resources made the desired impact on the target groups.
“We will be very happy to increase support for social intervention programmes in Ghana, as and when more request come. This is critical because these are the types of projects we want to support. We want to support more people especially women from poverty,” Ghanem added.
The total World Bank commitments to Ghana currently total USD 1.731 billion with about 66 percent disbursed. However, Ghanem was also accompanied by Vegpro Ghana Ltd. (a leading agro company) in inspecting the farm plantations of its funded projects in the area and was satisfied with the spate of work. The team briefly visited the Akosombo Volta River Authority to have a view of the Authority’s operations.
