R. Sampanthan, a veteran Sri Lankan political figure and Tamil leader, has passed away at 91. Known for his relentless pursuit of peace, justice, and dignity for Tamil nationals, Sampanthan's demise marks the end of an era. The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) confirmed that he passed away while receiving hospital treatment.

Sampanthan, who led the TNA since 2004, was only the second Tamil to become the main opposition leader in the predominantly Sinhala country. His health had been in decline, causing him to miss current parliamentary sessions. Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe highlighted Sampanthan's tireless efforts to bridge national divisions, while global leaders like Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar lamented his passing.

The Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha and former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa also expressed their condolences. Sampanthan, who took office as opposition leader in 2015, was instrumental in the process of drafting a new Constitution and remained committed to a peaceful political resolution for Tamil autonomy. His legacy will be cherished by many who admired his vision for an equitable Sri Lanka.
