Russia Conducts Third Round of Tactical Nuclear Drills Amid Ukraine Tensions

On Wednesday, the Russian military initiated its third set of tactical nuclear drills, designed to compel the West to scale back its support for Ukraine. The exercises incorporate units from the central and southern military districts, equipped with Iskander short-range missiles, practicing the receipt and deployment of nuclear armaments to designated launch zones.

The air force units will also participate, arming warplanes with nuclear weapons for patrol flights. This series aims to keep Russian troops prepared for combat missions. Tactical nuclear weapons, which include bombs and short-range missile warheads, are intended for battlefield use and are less powerful than strategic nuclear weapons.

Previous drills took place in May and June, with the latter conducted jointly with Belarusian forces. Russia transferred some tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus last year, further emphasizing its military partnership with the neighboring country. President Putin continues to highlight Russia's nuclear capabilities, aiming to deter enhanced NATO support for Ukraine.
