In a significant political shift, former Rajya Sabha MP Mamata Mahanta joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday, following her resignation from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) a day prior. Mahanta emphasized her commitment to the service and welfare of the common people as the driving force behind her decision.
'My only aim is the service and welfare of the public. It can be fulfilled only by joining the BJP,' Mahanta stated. The switch incited protests among BJD workers, who burned her effigy in various parts of Odisha, including Mayurbhanj.
Mahanta, hailing from the Kudumi tribal community of Mayurbhanj, submitted her resignation to both the BJD and Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, consciously stepping down. Her resignation letter highlighted her gratitude for the opportunities provided to address public issues in the House.
On social media, Mahanta announced her resignation and expressed appreciation for her roles appointed by the BJD president. However, she noted a perceived lack of need for her and her community's services within the BJD, prompting her difficult decision.
BJD MP Sulata Deo criticized Mahanta's transition to the BJP, vowing continued loyalty to Naveen Patnaik and the BJD. 'All MPs are not 'bikau'. Now, no MP will go. You (the BJP) can do horse-trading but you can't do leader trading,' Deo declared.
In the context of recent electoral performances, the BJD suffered a major blow in the 18th Lok Sabha elections, winning no seats, whereas the BJP secured 20 out of 21 seats. This result marked the end of Naveen Patnaik's 24-year tenure as Odisha's Chief Minister, following the BJD's loss to the BJP in the state assembly elections as well.
