To Lam Takes Helm as General Secretary of Vietnam's Communist Party

Vietnamese President To Lam has assumed the role of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, following the death of his predecessor, Nguyen Phu Trong. Lam, 67, was confirmed for the position through unanimous support from party delegates. He promises to continue Trong's policies on foreign affairs and socioeconomic development, particularly emphasizing the ongoing anti-corruption campaign.

Lam expressed his commitment to the anti-corruption efforts, citing his extensive experience from his tenure as police minister. Vietnam has recently seen political turbulence partly attributed to the strong anti-graft drive, which attracted multinational corporations for its political stability.

There is still uncertainty about whether Lam will hold both the general secretary and presidential roles simultaneously until the legislative session concludes in 2026. Some diplomats suggest a new president might be appointed, allowing Lam to focus solely on party leadership. If Lam retains both roles, Vietnam might witness a shift towards a more centralized and autocratic leadership style, akin to China's political structure.
