Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has highlighted the crucial roles that India and China could assume in resolving the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Speaking on Saturday, Meloni expressed that these nations have significant influence in brokering peace.
''I believe China and India have a role to play in resolving the conflict. The only thing that cannot happen is to think that the conflict can be solved by abandoning Ukraine,'' Meloni said, after her meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at a conference.
Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged India as one of the countries engaged in efforts to mediate peace in Ukraine. Russia's Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov backed this assertion, indicating the unique position of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who maintains active communication with both sides.
During an annual business forum in Italy, Meloni reiterated that supporting Ukraine remains a key national interest for Italy. Modi, in his historic visit to Ukraine on August 23, encouraged Zelenskyy to pursue direct peace talks with Russia. This visit followed Modi's earlier summit with Putin, stirring attention from Western nations.
India's diplomatic efforts underscore its willingness to contribute to finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict, as stated by Modi in his discussions with Zelenskyy.
