Algerians headed to the polls to determine whether President Abdelmadjid Tebboune will secure another term in office. The election, overshadowed by pro-democracy protests five years ago, has faced voter apathy and skepticism about its legitimacy. Tebboune, backed by the military, is expected to win amid low turnout figures.
On Election Day, many polling stations in Algiers remained largely empty, despite authorities extending voting hours to accommodate the summer heat. As of 5 pm, turnout was just 26.5 percent in Algeria and 18.3 percent for overseas precincts. Preliminary results are anticipated late Saturday night or early Sunday morning.
Tebboune, dubbed "Uncle Tebboune" by his campaign, seeks to bolster his legitimacy through increased voter participation. Yet, doubts about the election's fairness persist, with activists and former protest leaders criticizing it as a mere rubber stamp exercise for the status quo.
