U.S. President Donald Trump's interest in acquiring Greenland has drawn sharp criticism from the Danish territory's Prime Minister, Mute Egede. Egede told Danish public broadcaster DR that Trump's actions have not shown respect towards Greenlanders since expressing interest in the mineral-rich Arctic island.
While Trump reiterated his commitment to investing billions in Greenland for job creation and prosperity, Egede stressed the importance of Greenland deciding its own future and criticized the U.S. President's approach as alienating.
With an upcoming general election and a poll indicating that 85% of Greenlanders oppose joining the U.S., Egede emphasized Greenland's economic challenges and the need to pursue relations with nations that respect Greenland's sovereignty.
