The national general secretary of the Trinamool Congress, Abhishek Banerjee, has accused the Modi government of using new legislative bills as a means to maintain power without accountability. He contends that these bills are a distraction from the Centre's failure in advancing the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, now stalled at the Supreme Court.
During a press conference in Kolkata, Banerjee described the proposed legislation as a mere 'gimmick'. He expressed conditional support, suggesting a reduced jail term for ministers and accountability measures for investigating officers if a minister is not found guilty. Banerjee emphasized that the bills would face challenges in Parliament due to insufficient backing for constitutional amendments.
Home Minister Amit Shah introduced three bills, including proposals affecting the positions of prime ministers and chief ministers facing serious charges. Despite the support hurdles, the bills have stirred political tensions and are now under consideration by a Joint Committee of Parliament.
