In a heated debate over election reforms within the Lok Sabha, Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav accused district-level officials of undermining the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. Addressing ANI, Yadav asserted that these local administrative figures functioned like a political party, creating 'mischief' in the voting process.
According to Yadav, while the Election Commission holds responsibility for overseeing the SIR, it cannot bear all the blame. He claimed that directives from influential figures in Lucknow could override EC's orders, leading to manipulated voter lists. His remarks called for attention to judicial independence alongside comprehensive electoral reforms.
The ongoing debate has been marked by opposition figures, including Congress MP Manish Tewari and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, accusing the Election Commission of colluding with the BJP. The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are set to continue discussions, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah expected to lead the Rajya Sabha debate on SIR.
