In a highly anticipated move, the Election Commission has released West Bengal's draft electoral rolls, showing the deletion of more than 58 lakh voter names due to reasons such as death and migration. The revised rolls now include 7,08,16,631 voters as the state gears up for assembly elections next year.
The announcement has sparked a political debate, with the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) accusing the BJP and the Election Commission of orchestrating a 'joint conspiracy' to intimidate citizens through the prospect of hearings for nearly two crore voters. The BJP, however, dismissed these allegations, asserting that the claims are politically driven.
The draft rolls publication comes in the wake of sensitive political climate and tensions, with reports of panic-related incidents surfacing across the state. The commission has assured voters that deletions are not conclusive and provided a timeline for filing claims and objections.
