The United States is stepping up pressure on Iranian officials with new sanctions over allegations of suppressing anti-government protests in the country.
On Thursday, the Treasury Department sanctioned the secretary of Iran's Supreme Council for National Security, accusing him of inciting violence against demonstrators. In addition, 18 individuals and companies tied to a hidden banking network with connections to Iranian financial institutions were also targeted.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized the United States' solidarity with Iranians calling for freedom and justice. While the measures restrict access to US assets and business, their impact may be limited since many of those affected lack funds in the United States.
