The 19th session of the Nepal National Assembly officially kicked off on Sunday at the Federal Parliament building in Kathmandu, with Chairman Narayan Prasad Dahal presiding over proceedings. This significant meeting marks the Upper House's first session following the political upheaval driven by the Gen Z movement, which succeeded in ousting the K P Oli government last year.

The National Assembly, a permanent fixture of Nepal's Parliament comprising 59 members, continues its legislative functions despite the dissolution of the Lower House by President Ramchandra Paudel last September. The dissolution was executed upon the prime minister's recommendation during the Gen Z movement's ascendancy. Members of the Upper House serve a six-year term with a third of these members' tenures expiring biennially.

Currently, the assembly's composition includes 25 members from the Nepali Communist Party, 16 from the Nepali Congress, and nine from the CPN-UML, alongside representatives from smaller political parties. A pivotal election is scheduled for January 23 to fill 19 vacant member positions. The National Assembly is set to reconvene for its next session on January 23.
