Armenia's Civil Contract party, led by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, secured victory in a pivotal election considered a test of its diplomatic handling, particularly focusing on its relations with Azerbaijan and the West. The win comes amidst allegations of blatant electoral interference by Russia.
With 49.8% of the votes, Pashinyan's party will form a parliamentary majority, unlike its pro-Russian opponents who gained 31%. The strong turnout highlights the populace's vested interest in redefining Armenia's foreign alliances, moving away from traditional dependence on Russia.
The election marked the first since the conflict with Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh in 2023. International observers reported Russian meddling, criticizing its public threats and trade plans. Despite this, European leaders have expressed support for Armenia's shift towards democratic and Western integration.
