The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) will not proceed with its demolition drive against encroachment on the Yamuna flood plain near Majnu Ka Tila gurdwara this weekend, sources have reported.
The postponement comes despite prior notice from the DDA stating that the demolition would occur on July 13 and 14. Residents of the area, many of whom are Pakistani Hindu refugees, were informed late Thursday evening.
The DDA's notice, referring to previous orders from the National Green Tribunal and the Delhi High Court, requested that residents vacate the premises by Friday. Temporary accommodations have been made available at Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) shelters.
The National Green Tribunal had criticized the DDA for not taking effective steps to remove encroachments and mandated a compliance report by July 15.
Notably, ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, some refugees in Majnu Ka Tila were granted citizenship certificates under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
