A catastrophic collapse at Kampala's Kiteezi landfill claimed the lives of at least 18 individuals, according to the Red Cross.
The incident, which occurred late Friday, left 14 others injured, including children. Authorities suspect that heavy rainfall triggered a structural failure in the waste mass.
Efforts to retrieve bodies were hampered by continued rainfall, as confirmed by Irene Nakasiita of the Uganda Red Cross. The landfill, set on a steep slope, is in a poor area where residents often scavenge for plastic waste, making safety a pressing issue.
