In a concerning development, the pollution levels in Mumbai spiked dramatically in October 2025, according to a report from the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA). This alarming increase made the month the most polluted period of the year so far.
Data from October 18 to 22 showed that 19 monitoring stations across the city recorded their highest daily average PM2.5 levels, while seven stations registered peak PM10 levels since January, as per CREA's analysis derived from the Central Pollution Control Board's data.
Experts attribute this surge to factors such as vehicular emissions, construction dust, and other persistent pollution sources, which significantly degrade air quality, particularly during the festive season. The high pollution levels pose significant health risks to vulnerable populations, necessitating urgent action from local authorities.
