Kashmir could soon experience the end of its prolonged dry spell as 'Chillai-Kalan' begins, promising wet weather in the valley. Officials have indicated that a western disturbance is expected around December 21-22, aligning with the harsh 40-day winter period known traditionally for severe conditions.
This weather system is likely to cause moderate to heavy snowfall in the higher regions and light to moderate snowfall or rain across the plains. Historically the chilliest and most prolific snow-bearing time of the year, 'Chillai-Kalan' will likely see a sharp drop in temperatures until it concludes on January 30.
The dry start to winter has exacerbated health issues, increasing the incidence of cough and the common cold among residents. Sub-zero temperatures persist at night, with Srinagar, Qazigund, Kupwara, and other areas experiencing significant cold, while a dense fog envelops the region, particularly near water bodies.
