Yasir Sultan, the Asian Games 2023 silver medalist in the javelin competition, has accused the Pakistani government of not fulfilling its promise of a Rs 5 million reward. Sultan expressed his grievances on Wednesday, pointing out that despite repeated visits to the Pakistan Sports Board and Prime Minister's House, the cash reward promised by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif remains unpaid.
The allegations surface amid the government's recent announcement of Rs 300 million in total rewards for Arshad Nadeem, who claimed a gold medal in javelin at the 2024 Paris Olympics, marking Pakistan's first Olympic gold since 1984. Nadeem's performance, which shattered the Olympic record with a throw of 92.97 meters, has seen him gain extensive recognition and financial promises, including Rs 150 million from the federal government and additional rewards from provincial authorities.
Sultan criticized the disparity in treatment, stating, "Last year, I was honored by the Prime Minister with the announcement of a Rs 5 million reward, but till today, I have received nothing." He also mentioned unfulfilled promises of training abroad, further highlighting inconsistencies in the government's support for athletes.
