The absence of star para athletes such as Sumit Antil and Yogesh Kathuniya cast a shadow over the World Para Athletics Grand Prix, which began on a subdued note on Tuesday. These athletes are currently training as per their international schedules ahead of the World Championships in September, according to PCI President Devendra Jhajharia.
Many top Indian and international athletes withdrew from the event for various reasons, leading to minimal participation in several competitions. In the men's high jump T42 category, only one athlete, Ramsingbhai Gobindbhai Padhiyar, competed, while three others withdrew. Similarly, in the men's javelin throw (F33, F34), only two competitors participated, with Uzbekistan's Oybek Egamnazarov taking the top spot.
PCI President Jhajharia praised the event as an opportunity for athletes to play for their country and highlighted the well-organized opening ceremony. He emphasized the importance of athletes focusing on long-term plans and training for the World Championships, urging patience for more competitive events in the future.
