Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Gabon's veteran striker, will be absent from the team's opening match at the Africa Cup of Nations next week. This follows a thigh injury sustained during Olympique de Marseille's victory over AS Monaco in Ligue 1.
The Gabonese Football Federation has confirmed that Aubameyang, 36, is staying in France for medical treatment before potentially joining his national squad for later Group F matches. The decision came after consultations between Olympique de Marseille's and the national team's medical staff.
Gabon, poised to face strong competitors like defending champions Ivory Coast during the tournament, also deals with the possible absence of Metz centre-back Michel Mboula due to another muscle strain.
