The Philippine law enforcement is investigating the deaths of two student athletes from Ateneo de Manila University's basketball team. The incident occurred during a team-building exercise. The case has attracted widespread attention, prompting probes from the National Bureau of Investigation and a potential congressional inquiry.
The Philippine law enforcement launched an investigation on Thursday into the deaths of two student athletes from a leading university basketball team. The case has prompted nationwide attention in the sport-inclined country. Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili, of Ateneo de Manila University, died during a drowning incident in a northeastern coastal province.
The team, coached by Tab Baldwin, who has a successful international career, is now under scrutiny by the National Bureau of Investigation. The probe aims to explore "all angles," including compliance with safety protocols and the absence of foul play, following orders from the justice ministry.
The incident has also attracted legislative interest, with lawmakers proposing a congressional inquiry. While the university and Baldwin remain silent publicly, Ateneo confirmed it has initiated its investigation. Meanwhile, Baterbonia's grieving mother expressed her agony and confusion over her son's death in a local TV interview.
