World Boxing Gains Momentum with Expanding International Membership
World Boxing has expanded its membership to 84 countries, adding China and Turkey, both medalists in the previous Olympics. The IOC has granted provisional recognition to World Boxing, launched in 2023, signaling a step towards its inclusion in the LA 2028 Olympics after the IBA was derecognized.
World Boxing has successfully increased its global membership to 84 countries, with China and Turkey being the latest to join. Both nations had athletes who secured medals in last year's Paris Olympics, making their addition a strategic move for the organization.
Last month, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) provisionally recognized World Boxing, which was established in 2023. This recognition is seen as a significant step towards ensuring the sport's presence in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. The decision came after the IOC stripped the International Boxing Association (IBA) of its recognition, citing governance and financial issues.
China performed admirably in the Paris Olympics, finishing second in boxing with three gold and two silver medals. Turkey, sharing the eighth position with France, took home two silver medals and a bronze. Meanwhile, Sudan, Greece, Montenegro, and Slovakia were also announced as new members, reflecting the organization's growing influence.
