The cosmetics industry in France is on tenterhooks as it braces for possible significant repercussions from the United States. This development follows a move by the European Union to impose tariffs on U.S. imports, including makeup.
According to Emmanuel Guichard, secretary general of France's trade association FEBEA, the prospect of a trade war looms large, potentially disrupting a sector integral to France's economy. The numbers underline the stakes, with France importing approximately €200 million worth of U.S. makeup and exporting about €2.5 billion of beauty merchandise annually.
"We are entering a trade war that we do not want to be part of," Guichard stated, emphasizing the industry's apprehension over the unintended consequences of the EU's tariff strategy.
